Protect Your Smile from St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Green milkshakes on green backgroundYou don’t have to be Irish to enjoy celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Besides wearing a green shirt to avoid pinching, you might consume alcohol or partake in other festivities. Although it is only 1 day out of the year, dental practices see a 64% increase in dental emergencies. Many are alcohol-induced accidents, but injuries aren’t the only culprit. Many factors can affect your dental health while celebrating St. Patty’s Day. You don’t have to skip get-togethers to keep your mouth healthy by following 5 tips.

1. Watch Out for Green Foods and Drinks

Green food coloring is added to many treats and drinks during St. Patrick’s Day. Although it adds to the excitement of the day, food coloring won’t just stain your shirt. Dye and dark pigments can stain your enamel. If food coloring is used in alcoholic drinks, it can make your teeth more likely to discolor because it will weaken your enamel temporarily. It’s best to use a straw when drinking dark beverages to lessen contact with your teeth. Drink it all at once instead of sipping it.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Whether you’re having beer, wine, or other beverages containing alcohol, you’re at risk of dehydration, which will cause your saliva consumption to plummet. A dry mouth is a great environment for oral bacteria growth that can lead to unpleasant odors, cavities, and gum disease. It’s important to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated to keep your mouth moist.

3. Avoid Hard or Crunchy Foods

Nuts, pretzels, and other hard snacks are popular in many bars. Unfortunately, they can lead to a broken tooth. Hard foods can weaken your teeth over time. Eventually, they can break, which will mean a trip to an emergency dentist. Moderate your consumption of hard snacks. Instead, look for healthier alternatives, like fresh fruits and vegetables.

4. Wear an Athletic Mouthguard

If you’ll be spending the day participating in a sports activity, don’t forget to wear an athletic mouthguard. An afternoon mountain biking or a friendly game of football can easily lead to a knocked-out, broken, or dislodged tooth. A mouthguard will protect your pearly whites, and even lessen your risk of a concussion if you suffer an injury.

5. Don’t Forget to Brush a Floss

After a long night of partying, don’t crawl into bed without first brushing and flossing your teeth. Brush for 2 full minutes before calling it a night. Floss carefully to remove any food residue or plaque missed by your toothbrush.

If the unexpected occurs, don’t panic! Your emergency dentist will get you into their office quickly to address your pain and save your smile.
