How Dental Insurance Works

Insurance coverage formsDental insurance policies are actually complex contracts between the individual patient, their insurer, and in many cases, their employers. Your specific coverage will be based on elections you’ve made, plan premiums, and a variety of other factors, so we’ll need to review your policy in order to provide an exact estimate of the out of pocket costs of your dental care. In most cases, traditional dental insurance policies offer the following coverage:

  • 100% preventive care covered
  • Minor restorative care around 70%-80% covered
  • Major restorative care around 50%

What is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance policies offer the greatest amount of coverage for treatments to manage chronic illnesses and emergencies. Dental benefit plans are typically focused on preventive services, offering 80 to 100% coverage for most preventive dentistry treatments to help patients avoid oral health concerns.

In-Network VS Out of Network Dentistry

A great things that sets dental insurance apart from medical benefits is the flexibility. You can receive coverage at almost any dental office. Below, we’ll provide more information about how in-network and out of network dental insurance coverage works in our office.

In-Network Coverage

Group of smiling young adults outdoorsWhile you don’t have to visit an in-network dental office to receive benefits for most plans, there are some advantages to working with providers who are in-network with your insurer. The main benefit is that the in-network dentist agrees to charge fees that fall within your insurance plan’s set maximums. This sounds complicated, but it simply means you only need to pay the out of pocket costs of dental care. We offer in-network benefits for most local insurers, including the following:

  • United Healthcare
  • MetLife
  • Humana
  • Aetna
  • Dentemax

Out of Network Coverage

If we are not in-network with your dental insurer, we’ll do our best to offer coverage that fits into your insurance plan’s set maximum fees. In some cases, our pricing may be higher. This means you’ll be responsible for the difference in price. In most cases, the additional fees are negligible, but if you’re concerned about pricing or benefits, please let us know. We’ll do our best to work with you and your insurer, so you’ll get the benefits you deserve.
